ROUNDUP
The inaugural Asian FIX Conference took place on 20th March 2003. It was a really
exciting day with an adventurous and interesting agenda, which definitely stayed away from the traditional,
standard stream of power-point presentations.
The FIX committee had asked Lorraine Hahn to act as MC and had based the morning
session "The Past, Present and Future of a Trade" around her previous role as host of Biz Asia on CNN.
The audience was therefore entertained by Lorraine and her 'expert' Richard Barlarkas of CSFB, commenting
upon and expanding on sketches carried out by 'actors' [leading buy and sell sides figures in Hong Kong]
to illustrate the themes. The 'actors' post sketch joined Lorraine and Richard to continue debate on each
section. The audience was also asked to actively participate using electronic voting tools, which was
widely deemed to be both fun and interesting.

The next section of the day, after lunch, was split into two themes. STP and the
Allocation Process, presented by Jim Leman of SSB [who was the first sell-side chairman of the FIX
Committee in the USA] and an Exchange Panel, involving the HK, Singapore and Shanghai Exchanges. Jim
posed many interesting questions throughout and made useful and extensive use of the interactive voting
tool to gain maximum audience participation. The exchange panel introduced by John Fildes of Morgan
Stanley, gave updates on their latest technological advances and how they were utilising FIX. It was great
to see that such prominent exchanges in the region actively participating.
The final session of the day was dedicated to break-out work group sessions.
Where delegates had a chance to gain face to face access to FIX professionals and vendor expertise.
A conference report is being produced which will contain a write up of the day's
events and complete review on the results of the work-group sessions. This will be available in the
next two weeks..
